Extraction is the process of removing teeth. Teeth need to be removed because they are causing pain, swelling, infection, have cavities or gum disease is present.  Extractions are usually performed in cases of impacted wisdom teeth, which cause crowding and misalignment of other teeth. Today, extracted teeth can often be replaced by implants at the same appointment.  In some cases the restoration can be done at the same time. 

Implants replace a missing tooth permanently. A titanium post is surgically implanted into the jawbone. The post will fuse with the jawbone and after the healing period, an artificial tooth is placed on the post.  This tooth will look as natural as the one which previously existed.  An implant can often be placed at the time of tooth extraction. A temporary crown can be placed, so that you never have to go without your tooth. A permanent porcelain crown is placed a few months later.  Implants can also be used to hold a denture, so that it literally snaps into place. The patient can remove it for cleaning.

Root canal treatment is performed when a tooth's pulp (nerve and blood supply) become infected or inflamed. With local anesthesia, the tooth is numbed and the pulp and bacteria are removed, leaving an empty pulp chamber. The chamber is filled with a sealant and a filling. Many times this procedure will only take one visit.  The tooth may require additional protection and reinforcement with a crown.
